PHILLIP BAYBUTT
The name is sometimes shown as BAYBUT or BAYBUTT
Philip James Baybutt was the first British citizen recipient of the Medal of Honour award.
He ended up in American after going to visit his brother, but ended up joining the Union Army just as war broke out.
Philip fought in many major battles and was seriously wounded twice as at least two of his horses were shot and fell beneath him.
He chose this trade because he was a driving of horses and carts, back in Manchester, and so he was used to dealing with horses.
He was awarded the Medla of Honour after snatching the enemy flag while fighting for the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry.
He returned back home to Manchester to work in his fathers business and had eight children but never fully recovered from his injuries and died aged 62. After his death his wife [Harriet Baybutt nee Jones] of over thirty years applied for a war widow's pension and received an allowance of 8 dollars per month. Phillip Baybutt was laid to rest in Manchester's Southern Cemetery with a headstone along with other family members .
